We are YUYA - three improvising musicians with our musical roots in both the afro-american tradition of jazz & latin and our western music tradition. We focus on Art, music and improvisation in our performances in a mix of free-form and compositional structures.
In the afro-cuban tradition music is a spirit of community, a mass culture. The Work of Art is in our view a product of the collective experience between artists and the audience. We apply this in meeting and performing for small children aged zero to three years. Furthermore we have developed a performance structure that embraces the children as well as their parents - a structure that creates the necessary space for prepared musical ideas as well as leaving space for improvisation and ideas/suggestions from the audience.
The experience of sound and rhythm is the centre of our work. We play for and with the children, and they can act as they like - sit still, crawl or walk, sing, play etc. We do not expect any particular behaviour, and the children have no or very little idea on how one usually behaves as an audience.
Every concert is a process consisting of several meetings with the children where we develop the foundation for a musical dialogue. We want to make the Art of Music a vital part of everyday life for the very young!
