JUV AUGUST 2006
Making choreography in a gorge

By choreographers Anne Grete Eriksen and Leif Hernes/Dansdesign

Detailed physical conditions will govern the preparations of an outdoors site spesific performance. Some of the research taken place over two years will take charge and demand certain choreographic solutions. In this case it can be the direction and power of the waterfall which is depandent on recent rain in the high mountains, the temperature of the excact performance which takes place from 1130 pm, the darkness, the acoustics of the gorge, wind conditions and the solidity of the rock. In advance  a number of geologists, mountain rescuers, red cross and local experts have evaluated the site and given advice. Local storytellers have been generous with their tales and experiences of the area, feeding us in to litterature and into music achives.

As choreographers we develope ideas with our team of artists and we transform and mold each idea untill it can be reherased on the spot. Often it takes a number of physical reherasing periods before each section find its place in the scenario.

The scenario of JUV is a booklet of 10 different scenes written chronolgically with notes for lightingdesig, set design, costume, music, performance of all artist grpupings with reference to sources of inspiration from Ibsens´Peer Gynt and chosen local material.   At the core of Dansdesigns work is the choreography of dancematerial which is developed in a preparatory research period on the site excactly one year before the premiere with 2 of the professional dancers. This preparatory research period create the foundation for the develpement of the dancematerial for the 70 minute long performance.
